iPhone/iPad: Importing video files using Apple’s memory card reader

  1. Purchase Apple’s memory card reader, it’s relatively affordable at $29 / 35 EUR.
  2. Place your video files under /DCIM folder (or it’s subfolders) on the memory card. If you used the memory card on your camera, the video files it recorded should already be in the correct location.
  3. Unlock your iOS device and plug-in the memory card reader. An import screen should appear. Select the files you want to import and tap “Import”.
  4. The imported videos will appear to “Videos” album in the Photos app. Select the files and add them to an album named “RaceChrono”.
  5. The video files in “RaceChrono” album will be available under “Photos app” in RaceChrono’s video list. Notice: If the “Photos app” section is not visible in the list, then you have disallowed RaceChrono’s access to the Photo albums. You can re-allow it in (device) Settings > RaceChrono > Photos > Read and Write.

Android: Importing video files through USB-cable

Notice: The operation will vary for each manufacturer and Android version. This is how it works in (near) standard Android 6.0.

  1. Connect your phone to your PC or Mac with USB cable.
  2. Select “USB charging” from the status curtain, and “File Transfer (MTP)” from the pop-up dialog.
  3. Windows: Your Android device should now appear as a drive in “This PC”.
  4. MacOS: Download and open “Android File Transfer” application from Google.
  5. Copy your video files to /DCIM/RaceChrono/ folder (in Internal Storage), or to /Android/data/com.racechrono.pro/files/Movies/RaceChrono/ (RaceChrono Pro – in External Storage), or to /Android/data/com.racechrono.app/files/Movies/RaceChrono/ (RaceChrono with Pro upgrade – in External Storage). Notice the folders are case sensitive, and you might need to create the folders beyond /Android/data/ before copying the files.
  6. The video files in folders in 5) will be available under “Internal storage” or “External storage” in RaceChrono’s video list.

Android: Using an USB-C memory card reader

Most phones with a USB-C port support memory card readers. Just plug-in a USB-C memory card reader, and open phone’s file manager app. On some phones the file manager app will open when the memory card reader is plugged-in, and on some others it can be opened from the status bar pull-down menu.
