I installed the authenticator app on my phone to help her and generated the code. She was able to login. I thought it was a one time deal and I deleted the app.I didn't note down the code. My Outlook for Mac (ver. 16.24 (if I remember correctly), downloaded from Office 365) seems not to accept two-factor authentication for an outlook.com e-mail account. A Microsoft page I saw yesterday but cannot find today indicated that Outlook for Mac 2016 should be able to accommodate 2FA.
